Automatic Detection of Inland Water Bodies along Altimetry Tracks for Estimating Surface Water Storage Variations in the Congo Basin

چکیده

Surface water storage in floodplains and wetlands is poorly known from regional to global scales, spite of its importance the hydrological carbon balances, as wet areas are an important compartment which delays transfer, modifies sediment transport through sedimentation erosion processes, a source for greenhouse gases. Remote sensing powerful tool monitoring temporal variations both extent, level, volume, using synergy between satellite images radar altimetry. Estimating levels over flooded area altimetry observation difficult. In this study, unsupervised classification approach applied on backscattering coefficients discriminate non-flooded Cuvette Centrale Congo. Good detection (open water, permanent seasonal inundation) above 0.9 ENVISAT Jason-2. Based these results, time series were automatically produced. They exhibit good agreement with regime Centrale. Comparisons against manually generated same missions at locations show very two processes (i.e., RMSE ≤ 0.25 m more than 80%/90% cases R ≥ 0.95 95%/75% Jason-2, respectively). The use rivers improves spatial pattern annual amplitude It also leads decrease by factor four surface estimates area, compared case where only considered.

Inland Water Bodies Monitoring Using Satellite Altimetry over Indian Region

Satellite altimetry for inland water applications has evolved from investigation of water height retrieval to monitoring since last two decades. Altimetry derived reservoir/ river levels can subsequently be used to deal with key inland water resources problems such as flood, rating curve generation for remote locations, reservoir operations, and calibration of river/lake models. In this work 29...

Water Level Fluctuations in the Congo Basin Derived from ENVISAT Satellite Altimetry

In the Congo Basin, the elevated vulnerability of food security and the water supply implies that sustainable development strategies must incorporate the effects of climate change on hydrological regimes. However, the lack of observational hydro-climatic data over the past decades strongly limits the number of studies investigating the effects of climate change in the Congo Basin. We present th...

Waveform retracking for improving inland water heights from altimetry

The altimeter emits a radar pulse, which is reflected at the nadir-surface and measures the two-way travel time, as well as the returned energy as a function of time, resulting in a return waveform. Over the open ocean the waveform shape corresponds to a theoretical model which can be used to infer information on range corrections, significant wave height or wind speed. However, the waveforms o...

Atmospheric Corrections for Altimetry Studies over Inland Water

Originally designed for applications over the ocean, satellite altimetry has been proven to be a useful tool for hydrologic studies. Altimeter products, mainly conceived for oceanographic studies, often fail to provide atmospheric corrections suitable for inland water studies. The focus of this paper is the analysis of the main issues related with the atmospheric corrections that need to be app...

Satellite Altimetry and GrAcE Gravimetry for Studies of Annual Water Storage Variations in Bangladesh

Four different data sources have been compared with respect to observations of the annual water storage variations in the region of Bangladesh. Data from satellite altimeters and river gauges estimates the variation in surface water storage in the major rivers of Bangladesh. The GRACE satellites measure the integrated mass change and hence the terrestrial soil moisture variations, which can als...
